Bearded dragon starter kit: component build vs store kits

Buy an adult-ready enclosure and proven UVB/heat stack once — instead of paying the upgrade tax on a 40-gallon “complete kit.”

Quick verdict: Skip boxed glass kits. Start with a 4×2×2 PVC enclosure, a linear T5 HO UVB with a proper fixture, thermostatted basking heat, and a temp gun. That stack costs more day one and less over the first year.

Who this is for

New keepers setting up their first bearded dragon, or anyone replacing an undersized tank before the animal outgrows it (again). Not a veterinary care guide — husbandry sizing and gear only.

What to avoid

Recommended build (BOM)

Bearded dragon — first-year component build

  • Enclosure
4×2×2 PVC (Zen / Kages / solid budget PVC)

Adult floor from day one; front doors; holds heat better than thin glass kits.

    $250–$550

  • UVB
T5 HO linear (Arcadia 12% or Zoo Med 10.0) + reflector fixture

Beardies need a usable UVI gradient — not a coil bulb in a dome.

    $60–$120

  • Heat
Halogen / deep heat + thermostat (dimming preferred for lamps)

Create a basking spot and cool side; never free-run high-watt heat.

    $40–$180

  • Measure
Infrared temp gun + digital probe thermometer/hygrometer

Verify surface basking temps and ambient gradient; dial stick-ons lie.

  • Furnishings
Basking platform, hides (warm + cool), food/water dishes

Functional climbing/basking height under UVB; secure hides both sides.

Upgrade-tax math (why kits lose)

A cheap kit looks affordable until you replace the enclosure, the UVB, the heat, and the thermometers within months. Buying adult-size PVC + T5 HO + controlled heat once usually lands closer to a single coherent spend — and the animal never lives in an undersized box.

FAQ

Can I start in a 40-gallon and upgrade later?

You can, but most keepers underestimate how fast “later” arrives — and how much money the double purchase costs. If budget is tight, prioritize the enclosure and UVB; defer décor.

Is a coil UVB “better than nothing”?

For a diurnal basker, coil/compact UVB is a false economy. Budget for a T5 HO tube and fixture instead of buying a coil you’ll throw away.
